Hmm... I've been wondering about it, the similarities between two completely unrelated things, and then it struck me: It seems that there are may things that Top Gear UK and Kotaku have in common. Their reviews aren't the usual, pass-on-deadline reviews; they're both entertaining and real. Their quirky bits. Yes, there are, and there are many.

Are there still more?

Pile them on below.

Note that these can be indicative of all Gawker sites:

They both do reviews and articles that are incredibly topical and rely on current events, so if you go back and read them you'll find yourself trying to remember what the hell is being referenced.

They're self referential to a fault. I'll bet if you click long enough on article links you'll find yourself back in time six years, and asking yourself "was that really that long ago."

The both praise the wonders of a bygone age, saying things were better "back then" even though they probably weren't.

The nitpick. Oh, do they nitpick.

Sometimes they try a little too hard and it makes me cringe.

They have their "hate list" of games or series that they dislike, just like Top Gear has the brands they abhor.

Real in a sense that they don't sound like a generic, regular review. The little quips, one-liners, references that, like in the review for This War of Mine, has depth. It's more than just: "This is a crummy feature" or " The menus are straightforward yet elegant", bu that they add a spice of simile or metaphor that's both funny, silly, and still connects to you and tells you: Yes, you should play this game" or "The new Civic Type R is hopeless".

Real, in a sense, that it isn't too completely scripted. It's natural, the words, when they come out. They're organic. They really do think this way and can show it to you in a different way. Not the usual way like they do in most other publications.

Oh, and Kotaku reviews snacks. There's that.

That sounds more unique than "real" that said I think both Top Gear and Kotaku offer pretty rubbish reviews which seem more interested in snarky jokes than helping the consumer.

I'll say that I like your comparison. Both are quirky and fun.
